Police officer hurt in crash

Early yesterday morning the Police cruiser was travelling east past the Riddells Bay gas station in Warwick when it went into a skid, reported Police press officer Evelyn James Barnett.

The car went into the offside of the road, hit a wall, bounced off into the other side of the road and hit another wall -- demolishing part of the wall in the process.

No injuries were reported for the 22-year-old male officer driving the car but the female officer, also sitting in the front seat, suffered a sprained foot and was taken to hospital. She was later released.

POLICE PROBE COLLISION AC POL Police probe collision Police are investigating a head-on collision which took place between two cycles on Middle Road in Paget early yesterday morning.

Police press officer Evelyn James Barnett reported that the accident took place near St. Paul's Lane shortly after midnight when a cycle ridden by a 26-year-old Warwick man swerved across the centre line and hit another cycle.

The rider of the other bike -- a 38-year-old Warwick man -- suffered a fractured jaw while the younger man injured his face and suffered abrasions.

Only one bike was extensively damaged.

FIREBOMBING REPORTED CRM Firebombing reported Police were called to a Glebe Road residence at 4.30 a.m. yesterday morning where a 25-year-old woman reported that her car had apparently been firebombed.

A neighbour had seen flames in front of the grey Volkswagon which was parked near the Seventh Day Adventist Church and had reported it to the woman.

Police found the windscreen and forward roof of the car had been struck several times and smashed. There was also a large concrete block found in front of the car along with the remains of a charred bottle.

BELMONT APPOINTMENT APP Belmont appointment The Belmont Hotel has a new general manager, it was announced yesterday.

Gordon Slatford, 43, has taken over from Robert Fidel, who has moved to the former Forte-owned Le Meridien chain in London, now owned by Granada, to take over as product development manager.

London-born Mr. Slatford came to Bermuda from a Granada hotel in Portland, Oregon, where he was also general manager.

He was with the Forte hotel group for 18 years, starting as a chef and stayed on after the chain was taken over by Granada earlier this year.

Forte's Harmony Club has already been taken over in a management buy-out from Granada and much of the empire founded by the Scots-born cafe owner's son Lord Forte is up for sale.

HALL MAY FIGHT CTS Hall may fight Lawyer and former PLP MP Julian Hall is considering fighting a $81,456.33 judgment against him.

Earlier this year a writ was filed against Mr. Hall by Finance Minister Grant Gibbons.

But judgment was delivered last week in default of a defence, with interest of $578.01 and legal costs of $320.

Yesterday Mr. Hall told The Royal Gazette he did not know what the writ was about, adding he did not wish to discuss his private business.

Mr. Hall, who lost his Hamilton West seat in 1993, said he would consider asking for the judgment to be moved aside.

WILLIAMSON DEAD AT 81 OBT Williamson dead at 81 Former Royal Gazette proofreader Bill Williamson died in England last month after a short illness. He was 81.

Mr. Williamson, an Englishman who acquired Bermuda status, joined The Royal Gazette on August 20, 1953, staying with the company 27 years.

He died on October 21 at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton, Somerset. His wife, Charlotte, worked for 30 years as a payroll supervisor at Bermuda's King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. She died in England in 1991.
