Police report wave of crimes

There were three assaults, 18 break-ins, 25 stolen cycles, seven reports of wilful damage, five cases of stealing, 13 accidents, six of which involved injury, and four persons were arrested for impaired driving.

Police are also appealing to the witness of a handbag snatch last Thursday to come forward.

The incident took place around 8 p.m. on Thursday night when a man grabbed a bag from the basket of a cycle at the junction of Front Street and King Street and ran towards Reid Street.

Investigators would like to speak to the woman who was in the Dismont Robinson convenience store and spoke to the victim shortly after the incident occurred.

Two men aged 16-years-old and 24-years-old have been arrested in connection with the incident, but the information from the witness could be vital to the case.

Police are asking the woman to contact P.c. Vernon Young at the Hamilton Police Station at 295-0011.

LANDLORD SUES PUB CTS Landlord sues pub The company operating the Pub on the Square in St. George's has been hit with a writ for more than $50,000 in rent arrears.

A writ declaring damages of $54,487.50 brought against Talley Ltd. by holding company St. George's Enterprises Ltd. appeared on Monday in the Supreme Court register.

Second defendants were listed as: Phillip John Talbot, Lori Lee Talbot, Rowland Vincent O'Malley and Norma Toscelyn O'Malley as guarantors of the company's rents.

President of the plaintiff company, MP Mr. Leon (Jimmy) Williams -- the Shadow Minister for Community Affairs -- declined to comment yesterday. He is the brother of Norma O'Malley.

Mr. Williams' company is represented by Mr. Arnold Francis of Richards, Francis & Francis. Hall & Associates acts for the defendants.

WAKE-UP CALL CTS Wake-up call Stevon Somersall had a rude awakening when he fell asleep at the wheel of his car.

The vehicle flipped over and came to rest on a wooden railing on North Shore Road, Smith's Parish.

Yesterday Somersall, of Derwent Lane, Pembroke, was fined $300 in Magistrates' Court after admitting driving without due care.

Prosecutor Sgt. Donald Grant said the single-vehicle accident occurred on November 6 last year.

He said Somersall, 26, was travelling west along North Shore Road.

Somersall escaped with minor injuries although his vehicle was extensively damaged.

PLANTS FOR SALE ENV Plants for sale House plants, garden shrubs, palms, cedar trees, and ferns will go on sale "at extremely good prices'' this weekend.

The National Trust announced yesterday that its annual plant sale will be held on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to noon at Waterville in Paget.

"The plant sale is sponsored annually by our horticultural committee,'' National Trust director Ms Amanda Outerbridge said. "Money from the sale helps defray the upkeep costs at the Trust's gardens around the Island.'' Last year, the National Trust netted more than $3,000 from the sale.

This will be the second year for the sale at Waterville. Ms Outerbridge said the location has proven to be convenient.

"There is a lot of parking available at Waterville and the grounds allow us to showcase the plants attractively,'' she said. "We are grateful to Mr.

David O'Neill for again coordinating the sale, and to the plant donors for their generosity.'' BOOST FOR CABBIES TRA Boost for cabbies Bermuda Taxi Services is set to expand its operations if a planning application is passed by the Development Applications Board.

The North Shore service which operates more than 60 taxis applied this week to convert an adjacent property to commercial use.

Bermuda Taxi Services president Mr. Oliver Caisey refused to give details on the proposed expansion except to say it was to "facilitate further growth in the taxi industry''.

The property at 116 North Shore Road, Pembroke has been unoccupied for the last two years.

The DAB will make a decision on the application.
