Post office kept busy after air mail mix-up
Scores of letters sent from Bermuda to Jamaica were damaged following a mail mix-up.
And now Bermuda's postal workers are busy tracing the senders to inform them of the big write-off.
The mail of woe emerged after the letters and parcels were found stuffed in the floor of an Air Canada jet.
The discovery was made in Kingston after the jet flew there from Bermuda via Toronto.
Jamaican postal staff refused to accept blame for the mishap, saying the red mail bag was cut at the bottom.
And now the letters have received the last post -- back to Bermuda.
Mrs. Velda Smith, Bermuda's assistant Postmaster General, said yesterday: "Some of the mail is in bad shape, and really mutilated.'' She added: "We are now faced with the task of informing customers that their registered items were returned in damaged condition.'' Mrs. Smith said Air Canada had been sent a letter about the mix-up.
"Too often we get blamed when it's not our fault.'' WHAT A WRITE-OFF! -- Mr. Derek Dillas, operations manager of Bermuda's General Post Office in Hamilton, shows the damaged mail which failed to find its Jamaican destination. (See story left).
