Yesterday MPs from both sides of the House of Assembly also paid tribute to veteran educator Edna Mae Scott, whose late husband Victor Scott was a former principal of the school which now bears his name.

"She was a role model for everyone and she is still strong physically and mentally and is interested in what is going on,'' said Sir John, who also attended the recent 65th anniversary of the Victor Scott school.

Shadow Human Affairs Minister Ewart Brown added: "I think that Bermuda should know that about 200 people joined in acknowledging this lady's service to Bermuda.'' On a sadder note MPs also expressed their condolences to the family of Kenneth Perinchief who died recently in a road accident and to the family of Bank of Bermuda CEO Charles Vaughan-Johnson whose wife died in England.

Former Health Minister Harry Soares said: "Kenneth had recently graduated from college but was tragically killed in an accident.

"Young people were sitting outside the hospital and there was a sense of tragedy. In a very short time Kenneth had left a mark on our country.'' Shadow Health Minister Renee Webb who was Mr. Perinchief's cousin, also sent her condolences as well as Technology Minister John Barritt .

PLP Leader Jennifer Smith said: "I would like the House to send its condolences to Charles Vaughan-Johnson on the loss of his wife.''
