Prison likely for Southampton man

having a valid driving licence to escaping Police custody and will likely spend the next 120 days in prison.

Aaron Chapman, 40, of Lighthouse Hill in Southampton was riding east on Middle Road on September 3 when he was stopped by Police at 1.15 a.m.

A female officer informed him he had warrants for his arrest, and he responded by starting his bike and trying to ride away.

However, Police officers held onto him but were unable to prevent him from speeding away.

Police pursued him into the Olivebank Townhouse estate, but could not find him.

At 1.30 a.m. an Ord Road resident returned home and found Chapman hiding near his front door.

A struggle ensued and Chapman was held until Police arrived, when another struggle ensued.

He was eventually arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station where he was detained and appeared before Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner yesterday morning.

Chapman pleaded guilty to escaping custody and resisting arrest and was fined $300 for each offence.

The offences for which Chapman had been arrested were then put to him so he could enter a plea.

Chapman pleaded guilty to having no insurance, no driver's licence and no vehicle licence on April 11 in Paget, for which he was fined $1,000, $100 and $250 respectively.

He also pleaded guilty to having no insurance, no driver's licence, and no vehicle licence on March 8 in Pembroke, for which he was fined $1,000, $100, $250 respectively.

He was also fined $100 for riding without a driver's licence.

Chapman asked Mr. Warner for mercy, but he was told: "This is a merciful court, just not tolerant''.

Mr. Warner told Chapman he had been caught doing the same thing on a number of different occasions, he had not rectified the situation by getting insurance and licences, and failed to show up in court when he had been caught.

Chapman was told: "Pay today, or serve 120 days default.''
