Promotions for solders
carrying out their duties, were recently awarded several promotions at a Government House ceremony.
Four men received their commission after successfully passing the officers course and are now second lieutenants. This is the first stage of the commissioned ranks.
The next stage will be a first lieutenant, followed by captain, then major.
The successful second lieutenants are Mr. Nicholas Mansell, Mr. Stephen Caton, Mr. George Jones and Mr. Marc Telemaque.
They were put through an intensive eight-month local commissioned officers course that culminated in a two-week exercise in Jamaica.
Bermuda Regiment Adjutant, Capt. Henry Simpson who ran the course, said that nine men started as officer cadets in September.
"They were given leadership training so that they will be able to command a platoon (40 men) in barracks and on an operation,'' he said.
After the classroom work was completed, all their knowledge was tested in the field during the Regiment's tour of Jamaica.
The Regiment now has five new warrant officers, including new Regimental Sergeant Major Terry Fray, who was promoted to warrant officer (first class) on January 1.
Sgt. majors Alvin Harvey, Randy Raynor, Marilyn Steede, and Robin Steede all achieved the rank of warrant officer (second class) on January 12.
Warrant officer (second class) is the next rank for those soldiers who have successfully risen through the non commissioned ranks such of lance corporal, full corporal, sergeant and colour sergeant.
They were each evaluated on their performance, which was assessed during stints with the Army Training Regiment in Surrey England, and drill exercises at Brecon, Wales.
Though not weighed as heavily, seniority was also considered.
Lc.Cpl. Patrick Cannonier received an 18-year clasp for efficient service, while colour sergeant Anthony DeSilva, along with Sgts. Neville Trott, Hilton Richardson and Charles Symonds all received an efficiency medal for 12 years service.
Warrant officer (second class) Marilyn Steede also received an efficiency medal though she was unable to attend the ceremony due to illness.
