Public divided over UBP boycott
Throne Speech in protest at the way Government is planning to introduce changes to the Constitution. Reporter Stephen Breen took to the streets to find out how Bermudians viewed the protest.
Former Tourism Director Colin Selley of Paget said: "It was a logical thing to do. I personally believe that while it is unfortunate for something like that to happen on a ceremonial occasion, it was necessary to do something to direct attention to what's happening, and the way the present Government seems intent on doing what it damn well pleases without any reference to the people of Bermuda.'' Ras Mykkal of Warwick said: "Two wrongs don't make a right. If you can't learn from someone else's mistakes and repeat them, that's wrong. Pam (Gordon) said the PLP did it in 1973, but that doesn't make it right. I expect intelligent people who accept the responsibility of running the people's affairs to do so with dignity.'' Sarah Burrows of Sandys Parish said: "It was a good idea. It is a very important issue and Britain wouldn't pay any attention unless something was done as dramatic as that. I fully support it.'' Dionne Dickinson of Paget said: "What are they trying to change? There must have been a good enough reason for them to boycott it, but they still should have turned up. They should have put aside their differences for the day, then started up again when they got back to the office.'' Former United Bermuda Party MP Colin Benbow of Paget said: "It wasn't the first time, and they did it with good taste. They turned up in the House in the right rig and didn't bother to participate because I really do think they represent the majority point of view that the correct procedures need to be followed if you are going to tamper with the Constitution.'' Kevin Lohan of Pembroke said: "I can see why they did it, but it shows disrespect. There is a petition going round (calling for a constitutional conference) and I signed it, but (the boycott) looked bad for the Island as a whole.''
