Repeat offender gets jail term
Archibald Warner, who said he was convinced he displayed contempt for the court in repeatedly committing the same offences.
Last week Michael Ameshak Jones, 19, of Warehouse Lane, pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified, disobeying a traffic sign and making a false statement.
Mr. Warner recognised Jones from plea court earlier in the week when he was convicted of committing the same offences in the same vehicle.
"You've been in for the same offences in 24 hours,'' Mr. Warner said.
"It's clear you treat this court with contempt. The court will treat you how you treat it.'' The court heard that on July 12, Jones was driving west along East Broadway into Hamilton when he turned right on to Lane Hill although traffic signs indicated that turn was illegal.
He was stopped at 8.50 a.m. by a uniformed Police unit and claimed to be someone else.
However information from the Transport Control Department revealed his true identity and that he was disqualified from driving motor vehicles.
Mr. Warner asked Jones if he had anything to say.
The young man crossed his arms, sighed and mumbled: "Very sorry.'' The Magistrate said: "If you don't respect these courts, that means you're going to fear them.'' Jones, who had outstanding fines, was fined $1,100 for the new offences and was sentenced to 90 days in jail for repeatedly driving while disqualified.
