Report to recommend three more daily flights
And one recommendation expected to come out of the report is the need for three more flights each day in order for the Island to get competitive airfares from carriers.
Tourism Minister David Dodwell told the House of Assembly during yesterday's debate on the Tourism Budget that the review will focus on action steps.
It stems from the discussions a group representing different areas of the hospitality industry had with stake holders and airlines on the subjects of the airline industry, charters, the Bermuda Two agreement, marketing and price. One option Bermuda was considering was opening up its charter policy in order to help it gain better fares and more capacity.
This started in the winter when Conquest began operating out of Toronto but "did not work as well as expected''.
He noted that one risk of operating a charter out of a gateway city to the Island was that the scheduled carrier from that city might pull out. Mr.
Dodwell added that Air Canada did not do this when Conquest began its operation. But what adding a charter flight from the city did was create competition and this was key to getting airfares down, he said. He said the Island wanted a second flight from Atlanta and a year round second flight from Boston.
