Residents in Dev. North want road widened

to widen their shrinking road.

Rupert Outerbridge and Franzetta Parker are getting fed up with a lack of action to fix their road -- which for a stretch is about three feet wide.

They say emergency services would not be able to get down the road -- Northcliff Lane in Devonshire North -- and that Government was originally responsible for the problem.

"It is supposed to be a ten-foot, it is supposed to be ten feet across, but in some parts it's just about three feet,'' said Mrs. Parker.

"About six years ago the Government came to repair the road and cut part of it back, but then they stopped and left it like it is now,'' she added.

Now at either end of the narrow stretch -- about 30 feet long -- signs warn of falling rocks. A broken-down railing protects people from falling about 20 feet down a slope.

Mr. Outerbridge and Mrs. Parker live just at the end of the narrow stretch and it is a squeeze for them to get their cars out.

Mrs. Parker has called Works and Engineering and the department's Minister Leonard Gibbons. However she was told Mr. Gibbons was off the Island and no-one at Works was available to speak to her.

She has also called the UBP's Parliamentary candidate for the seat Stewart Greenslade, who Mrs. Parker claimed said it would cost up to $70,000 to fix the problem which could not be done until after the by-election.

Yesterday Mr. Greenslade said Government was not to blame for the problem which it was going to fix after part of the slope collapsed.

"I am looking into the matter, but it is not going to be a five minute exercise and I may not get an answer until after the by-election,'' he added.

Last night the PLP candidate Paula Cox said she had not been directly approached by the residents on Northcliff Lane, but said if elected there were a number of concerns in Devonshire North that she would take up.

"If elected I would expect to be dealing with the queries that are raised by the constituents. If elected, as a public servant I will try and deal with residents' concerns.''
