The ban applies to commercial and recreational fishermen -- and could result in a $5,000 fine or a year in prison if violated.

According to Government the ban is designed to help protect reef dwelling fish, in particular red hinds and other groupers which congregate to spawn during the summer months.

In many parts of the world the species have been fished out because their breeding grounds are not protected.
