Review to be mounted into towers
the wake of discord over the newest facility.
Today, Cabinet Ministers are to be briefed on the 38 existing aerial locations with a view to looking at general policy on the towers.
The presentation has given a glimmer of hope to campaigners in Warwick, who are fighting on grounds of perceived health risks, to stop Bermuda Digital Communications building a mobile phone antenna in their neighbourhood.
But any outcome from the Cabinet meeting is unlikely to help their battle, since Telecommunications Minister Renee Webb had already stated that she was satisfied there was no hazard to health from the towers.
Yesterday, Ms Webb confirmed that her Ministry was to give an overview to the Government, adding that the assembled Ministers and Premier Jennifer Smith would decide any action.
"The Government is concerned about the bigger picture rather than just Warwick,'' said the Minister.
"The question is of public safety, whether or not there is an issue...for residents in Warwick...we are concerned for the country in general.
"We are concerned with what the people of Warwick are saying but we are concerned with not just one neighbourhood but all neighbourhoods.'' She added that Warwick residents, who have mounted their protest under the banner CARE, were suffering from the "not in my backyard'' syndrome and not looking at the whole scenario.
Steve Thomson of CARE said: "It is a very positive move.
"The more information Governments can get on electromagnetic radiation, the better it is for all Bermudians, where there is a potential threat to children and families.
"We have to be very careful there is no risk before we subject the people to that.'' He said it was more important to ask BDC to prove that the antenna was safe, than for residents to show that they weren't.
Mr. Thomson said he did not want to comment on remarks made about a NIMBY attitude in the Warwick neighbourhood.
It is understood building work at the Faraway site has ceased again after starting up temporarily last week. BDC's Michael Leverock did not return calls to the Royal Gazette yesterday.
