Rider suffers life-threatening injuries

A Sandys man was last night fighting for his life after he was involved in a serious road traffic accident in Southampton yesterday.

A Police spokesman said the accident occurred around 11.55 a.m. outside the Port Royal Gas Station when the 39-year-old cycle rider collided with a FedEx van.

The van driver was not injured but the cycle rider, on a Peugeot, was immediately taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital with serious head injuries.

The injured man was last night listed in a serious but stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit.

Middle Road was closed off and traffic was diverted onto the Railway Trail while a special Police road traffic accident investigator was called in.

Both vehicles were extensively damaged.

The driver of the van was 24 and from Paget.

"It would appear the van was pulling out of the garage and was turning right toward Sandys while the motorcycle was travelling toward Hamilton,'' the Police spokesman said.

He added: "For reasons that will be determined by the accident investigator, a collision occurred.''
