Saltus to welcome seventh head

Mr. Trevor Rowell will succeed Mr. Keith McPhee, who is retiring, chairman of the trustees Mr. James Amos announced.

Mr. Rowell, who comes to Bermuda from the principal's post at Havant College in Hampshire, starts work on August 1.

After 16 years at Saltus, Mr. McPhee, 61, is retiring with his wife to the French countryside.

After gaining an honours degree in history at Christ Church, Oxford, Mr.

Rowell went on to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he earned a PGCE with distinctions in history and music.

Next, he attended Hull University and completed a B.Phil in the history, organisation, and administration of education.

Mr. Rowell began his teaching career in 1976 at Oakham, where he became head of the history department before moving to Rutland Sixth Form College as head of the faculty of business and social science in 1983.

In 1986, he joined Deer Park co-educational school as deputy head, before moving on to Havant College in 1990.

In the last 10 years, Mr. Rowell has led numerous training courses for teachers, including four national courses for HM inspectors on teaching and pastoral care and a forum for school governors on recent trends in secondary education.

He sits on the governing bodies of two schools, has toured Canadian colleges to learn about North American education, and has attended recent courses on personnel law, financial and property management, strategic planning, and information technology.

Mr. Rowell has a strong interest in African history and his book on the history of Africa in the latter part of the 19th century is used as a standard GCSE text.

Also an accomplished musician, Mr. Rowell was the organist at his parish church.

In his application for the Saltus post, Mr. Rowell said he would aim to "lead a happy school, outward looking and flexible in its wish to prepare its pupils for a fulfilling and successful life in the next century, committed to high standards in all it undertook, and confident in its values.'' Mr. Rowell comes to Bermuda with his wife Gabriele.
