Saul Cabinet complete
Government House yesterday as the Hon. Yvette Swan took her position as Minister of Community Affairs.
Despite recent controversy surrounding the Premier's choice for the Jamaican-born Sen. Swan to head the ministry Dr. Saul said she was the best person to head the ministry which was "one of the most important ones''.
After being sworn in, Sen. Swan said: "I am really glad to be on board and I will serve the people of Bermuda to the best of my ability.'' On her plans for the Ministry Sen. Swan added that she wanted to get into the office first to look at the programme before making any plans. "Community and Cultural Affairs is not just the parade, it's small businesses and senior citizens,'' she said.
And defending herself against the Bermudians who felt a "Bermudian'' should hold the position Dr. Swan said she felt that she was quite aware of the arts life in Bermuda and despite her Jamaican roots she considered herself Bermudian.
Dr. Saul added: "This is a time consuming ministry which knows no bounds of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The health of the Island rests on the Community of Cultural Affairs and I have no doubt that Dr. Swan will do a first class job. I welcome you to the first class team.'' FINAL MINISTER -- Community Affairs Minister the Hon. Yvette Swan is welcomed to the Cabinet by the Hon. Harry Soares yesterday.
