The employee, a 79-year-old great grandfather, fought off the robber on Thursday morning until the culprit swung a machete at him in a violent manner.

Milford Bean received minor cuts to his hand during the altercation at Henry VIII Pantry on South Road, Southampton. He required stitches at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

During the struggle, Mr. Bean dropped the cash box containing several hundred dollars and the robber picked it up and fled.

His attacker was described as a black man, about five-feet-six to five-feet-eight inches tall, wearing a dark baseball cap, sunglasses, a white long sleeved hooded shirt (pulled up to his chin), and dark grey or blue flannel trousers.
