Atlantic Search and Rescue Centre in Norfolk, Virginia, to divert to the source of a distress beacon, activated shortly after 9 a.m.
A US-registered sloop, the 38-foot Anita had lost all diesel power about 280 miles north northwest of Bermuda and had activated its distress signal, Harbour Radio told The Royal Gazette .
Before sending a C-130 search and rescue aircraft to investigate the problem Norfolk requested the Oleander , being only 17 miles from the Anita's reported position, to assist.
The Anita reported she had suffered a diesel engine failure but informed search and rescue she was under sail to Bermuda. Harbour Radio said she is expected in about three days.
