Last night a Harbour Radio spokesman said the signal had probably been set off by mistake.

He said that at different times the signal seemd to come from points well inland, in Hamilton Harbour and very close to the South Shore.

He said boaters should check their emergency position-indicating radio beacons, known as Epirbs.
