Sir John: People must speak out
Milton Scott's call for the removal of Independent Senators after they voted against two Government bills towards the end of the last Parliamentary session.
And he warned of an "intellectual holocaust'' if people did not speak out on public issues. Sir John, in an exclusive interview with The Royal Gazette , said he was shocked the Government had not distanced itself from Sen. Scott's remarks. "That was a fundamental breakdown in due process,'' he said. "The Government call for the removal of the Independent Senators because they spoke their minds is a slap in the face of the political process. It shows there is political interference in all branches of Government.'' Sir John said he was also "amazed'' at the silence over the decision not to prosecute the owners of gambling machines.
"Nothing has been said about it except for an editorial in The Royal Gazette , and that includes no statements from the legal profession,'' he said. "I can recall a time when things were wrong that people spoke out. Now people are living in cocoons and saying nothing.
"When you recall the events leading to the Holocaust, the world stood by as Hitler built up his empire.
"Obviously today, we do not have a physical holocaust, but we could have an intellectual one where ideas and ideals are singed -- if not decimated -- by lack of expression of different views on subjects which affect us.'' See Page 4: Sir John Swan's opinion
