Six month sentence for thief
set was yesterday sentenced to six months in prison after he pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to theft charges.
Till's Hill resident Sinclair Anthony Simmons was spotted by a hotel manager on Monday pushing a trolley with the television in it around the hotel's grounds.
When asked by the manager and another staff member what he was doing, Simmons gave an unintelligible reply and continued to walk away with the set.
He was then grabbed by the manager, and in the ensuing struggle, Simmons fell overboard near PW's Marina and escaped.
The next day, Simmons was spotted and arrested by Police.
Under questioning he admitted stealing the television. He also told officers he got it from an unsecured room at the hotel and had intended to sell it.
It was revealed in court that the 40-year-old has a history of stealing. In August, Simmons was given a suspended sentence for five thefts -- including pilfering liquor from the Hamilton Princess.
Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis told Simmons: "You were placed on probation -- you were given a chance. And here you are less than a month later. You've left me no choice but to send you to prison.'' The suspended three month sentence from his August conviction was activated, and Mr. Francis added an additional three months for the latest offence.
