his mind in Magistrates' Court this week after a slip of the tongue.

Acting Senior Magistrate the Wor. John Judge asked Edward John Dill: "Were you not disqualified, or was it not you?'' The 40-year-old Pembroke man replied: "I was riding my bike, but when the officers came, I wasn't.'' Sgt. Peter Giles, prosecuting, said Police on duty on July 19 saw Dill riding his bike on the corner of Court and Angle Streets.

Mr. Judge fined Dill $350.

OUT OF BOUNDS CTS Out of bounds Trespassing on property owned by a Somerset church landed a 19-year-old man in Magistrates' Court this week.

Damion Edwards pleaded guilty to sitting on the wall of St. Joseph's Church with his friends, ignoring notices posted against loitering.

Six complaints from neighbours brought Police to the scene, said Sgt. Peter Giles. The area had a history of vandalism and drug use, he added.

Acting Senior Magistrate the Wor. John Judge gave Edwards the same sentence as handed out to one of the other young men who has already appeared in court -- a conditional discharge for six months.

OFFICER REINSTATED POL Officer reinstated Police Commissioner Mr. Lenny Edwards has issued a formal statement in an effort to dispel rumours over the recent suspension of a long-serving, high-profile police officer.

He confirmed that Sgt. Patrick Hamlett was suspended from the Police Force some weeks ago while an internal inquiry was conducted "pertaining to his duties as a sergeant in charge of a watch''.

But Sgt. Hamlett has since been reinstated and is resuming duties as normal.

Mr. Edwards stated: "There were no allegations of a domestic nature involving a woman and no other police officers were involved.'' Sgt. Hamlett was left for dead after a brutal night attack at his Devil's Hole home in July, 1984, after which five men were sentenced to 10 years in jail.

MINISTER'S APPEAL ENV Minister's appeal Minister for the Environment the Hon. Gerald Simons has appealed for Island residents to help keep Bermuda clean over the long holiday.

He urged people picnicking and camping on beaches and in public parks to take trash bags and clean up after themselves.

He said he hoped people would follow the example of certain church groups, who "go to great lengths to clean up their sites when they leave''.

Mr. Simons reminded residents that household garbage, which is normally collected on Thursdays and Fridays, would be collected today.
