So-called `yuppie' complex gets approval for extension

is set to double in size with eight new buildings in two blocks going up if the Development Applications Board gives it final approval pending a site visit.

The seven existing condominiums south of Ferrar's Lane have already been sold to mostly young professionals. The proposed eight will be larger with two to three bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen and dining/living area.

"Phase two will be much better and much larger because of market demand,'' said architect Mr. Paul Lowry of Woodbourne Associates.

He said work on the project would start as soon as final approval came through.

The project proposed by a local company of businessmen, Real Estate Development Ltd., had been held up by the Board's objections to the design and layout of the condominiums. As a result it has been "designed and redesigned'' Mr. Lowry said. "It's been a long and arduous process,'' he said.

In the early days of the project, he admitted there had been a "fair amount of objections'' from neighbours. But their wishes had been incorporated as far as possible into the final design.

The new condominiums were likely to sell for between $375 and $425 thousand, he said.

Also yesterday, the Bermuda Transportation Company won approval in principle to build a new covered boathouse at Agars Island.

Final approval on siting, design and external appearance and landscaping will be reserved by the Board.

Architects Barker and Linberg were unable to comment on the project yesterday.

A proposed barber and beauty shop slated for 123 North Shore Road near Crawl Hill was turned down on the basis that parking space was inadequate.

The DAB said the application failed to meet the minimum parking requirements as required under the Bermuda Plan 1992 Planning Statement.

The Board's concern was that cars would park all along the main road, said assistant director of planning Mrs. Aideen Ratteray Pryse.
