Soccer star jailed four years
yesterday.
Martin, 29, of Pembroke, admitted importing heroin and possessing heroin with intent to supply.
Crown Counsel Mr. Brian Calhoun told Supreme Court that on June 5 last year Martin took a flight from the US to Bermuda.
"Customs officers examined a tube of toothpaste, which was found in Martin's carry-on bag, and discovered a hard object therein. The defendant admitted the toothpaste tube contained heroin, which he imported because he needed the money.'' Mr. Calhoun added the substance, which weighed 15.41 grams, had a 65 percent purity and would produce 870 decks with a total street value of approximately $21,750.
"Martin has admitted to being addicted to heroin and said he purchased the heroin overseas for $150 per gram.'' Martin's lawyer, Mr. Archie Warner said his client had been unemployed for a few years and saw a chance to make some money.
"The driving force was his own addiction but he is salvageable,'' he said.
Martin had previous drug convictions, the court heard.
