years ago is in prison -- for another offence.

That is the firm belief of new Assistant Police Commissioner Mr. Wayne Perinchief.

He made his comments on Monday night's News and Views programme on ZBM.

Mr. Perinchief told viewers Police sometimes suspected someone had committed an offence -- but did not have enough evidence to bring charges.

Yesterday Mr. Perinchief declined to say what offence the bank robbery suspect was serving time for.

And he refused to disclose the length of his sentence.

"I do not wish to comment any further on what was said last night,'' he said.

Police spokeswoman Sgt. Roseanda Jones stressed the investigation over the 1991 robbery in Somerset still continued -- despite Mr. Perinchief's "strong belief'' the culprit was in jail.

"The case has not been shut because no-one has ever been brought to court over it,'' she said.

It was in November 15, 1991 that a gun-wielding robber wearing a crash helmet escaped with cash from the Bank of Bermuda branch.

Employees were left nervous and shaken by the incident.

Eyewitnesses said the man entered through the back entrance and fired a single shot, although it was not aimed at anyone.

He then grabbed a bag of money from an employee, and rode off on a bike.

A ten-man team headed by Mr. Perinchief, then a Superintendent, probed the robbery.

But the thief was never arrested or charged.
