Government Ministers were ordered to spend time in school classrooms yesterday.

The directive came from Premier Jennifer Smith who felt it was a fitting way for the Government to show their support and appreciation on World Teachers' Day.

The time of the regular Tuesday Cabinet session was altered to allow the Ministers time to fulfil their duties. Many attended assemblies and some even taught classes.

Premier Smith attended her alma mater, East End Primary School, in the morning, and at noon read a proclamation for World Teachers' Day on the steps of City Hall.

Recognising the important role teachers play in shaping the lives of Bermuda's, children and people, the proclamation paid tribute to those currently in the profession as well as those who have retired.

"Teachers play a central and critically important role in the advancement of education and the society as a whole,'' Premier Smith read.

"Teachers are sensitive, nurturing care givers in our all-inclusive school environments, dedicated to ensuring students who are well rounded socially, intellectually, spiritually, emotionally and culturally,'' she continued.

"The Government and people of Bermuda recognise, value and salute the professionalism, dedication and commitment of Bermuda's teachers and educators.'' Anthony Wolffe, president of the Bermuda Union of Teachers, was also on hand at the City Hall event and encouraged teachers to "press on'' despite the hardships they face in trying to carry out their work.

Education Minister Milton Scott noted that the profession was one of "the most demanding careers'' and pointed out that a total of six Government MPs have been teachers.

He urged teachers to rise to the challenge "to reach every child'' and noted the mode public education was taking in the lead-up to the next Millennium.

"As we approach the next Millennium we want every boy and girl to be able to take their rightful place in our society,'' he said.
