Mr. John Barnes, director of Agriculture and Fisheries, said his deparment became aware of the squatters on Friday.
A group of Muslims were camped on the island and claiming it belonged to them, he said. They refused to leave when approached by parks officials, but did leave on Monday when Police also attended.
Old cedar on the island was used as firewood, Mr. Barnes said.
A Police spokesman was not available for comment yesterday.
Police were also said to be investigating reports that intruders gained entry to the former Canadian Forces Station at Daniel's Head and damaged the fence.
Mr. Robert Bedser, chief surveyor with the Ministry of Works & Engineering, said the fence was damaged in the last two weeks.
