St. George's urged to fight double tax
about the double taxing of people in the town.
Alderman Noela Haycock said it was completely unfair that residents had to pay a tax to both the Corporation and Government for services such as garbage collection.
People living just outside the town had to pay Government a single tax based on annual rental value yet Government collected their garbage for free.
Mrs. Haycock said Corporation officials had met Government officials but had not been able to resolve the situation.
Although Government collects garbage in the town, the Corporation has to pay it to do so. One solution being looked at was the Corporation hiring its own garbage truck to reduce costs.
The Corporation has raised taxes in the town this year for the first time in 12 years. The tax, amounting to 1.25 percent of ARV, will raise an initial $100,000 extra for the Corporation.
At a Corporation public meeting in St George's Town Hall on Thursday, Mrs.
Haycock urged residents to protest to Government.
"If you happen to live outside the Corporation boundary, you pay land tax,'' she said. "If you live inside, you pay land tax and Corporation tax.
"We've been banging our head against Government because it isn't fair but we need taxes to pay services.
"We've approached Government many times and even approached the Tax Commissioner and he said the taxes on houses were cheaper in St. George's than in other parishes.
"We know it's not right, but that's the way the system works. It's something you should take up with your Government representatives and scream as loud as you can because we've been to Government.'' TAXES TAX
