Stop bickering, say area voters

East claim they have had a positive feedback from the community as they go around canvassing in the constituency.

But from the people we spoke to, some appear to be disillusioned with the two main parties and politics in general.

Gas station worker Peter Trott, 51, summed up the feeling of many people that we spoke to when he said that there was far too much bickering between the Government and Opposition parties.

Mr. Trott, who voted for the National Liberal Party at the last election, said: "The two parties don't seem to be able to communicate with each other, they're always fighting instead of listening to what each party has to say.

Mr. Trott said he had yet to be persuaded to vote for either party but would make up his mind nearer the election date.

"I will just have to wait and see,'' he said.

Artist George Burcher, 48, has made up his mind -- mainly because he feels that Government is not doing enough to tackle crime.

"They should be going after the big guys,'' he said. "The UBP is the party in Government and I just don't think they're doing enough on crime, which is my main concern.

"Another issue is affordable housing. The Government is setting up these housing projects now but it's too little too late -- they're just doing it now to stay in power. I think the UBP represents the rich middle classes while the PLP represents the working class.

"I think Renee Webb and Derrick Burgess have done a good job in opposition and I'll be voting for them again on November 9.'' Affordable housing is also on the mind of 64-year-old Shirley Franks.

"I believe God ended the Cold War so that the Americans could leave the base and their homes could then be used as affordable housing,'' he said.

"But the Government just doesn't seem to be listening. Those houses are fine and they were fitted with furniture and fridges and stuff. Why can't people move in?'' Taxi driver Colonel Hall also expressed dissatisfaction with the Government.

"It would take all day for me to list my concerns,'' he said. "For a start I think something should be done for taxi drivers on this Island -- I think we get a raw deal.

"But the main reason I'll be voting for the PLP is because I want to see what they can do once they get in power -- and I also think the UBP would make a better opposition.

"Whether or not the PLP can do a better job remains to be seen.'' George Burcher Graphic file name: BURCHVOX Shirley Franks Graphic file name: FRANKVOX Colonel Hall Graphic file name: HALLVOX Graphic file name: TROTTVOX Peter Trott POLITICS PTL
