Students cast ballots in historic vote
elected peers to represent their interests for the first time ever.
And while less than a fifth of the student population took advantage of the unprecedented process, organisers said they were pleased with the turnout.
At the end of the six-hour polling which began at 10 a.m. and attracted 105 students, 19-year-old Kenneth Caesar had garnered enough votes, 49, to become president of the student government.
He beat out Gino Smith and S'iphiwe Dube who received 30 and 24 votes, respectively.
Ilethea Morris, also 19, was voted in as vice president and Mitchell Trott as senator for the Faculty of Arts and Science. Both positions were uncontested.
Meanwhile, Nicole Reis and Elki Imbeault were elected as senators for the Faculty of Hotel and Business Administration. They received 28 and 24 votes, respectively. The other candidate for the post, Richard Todd, received 18.
There were no candidates for two senate positions for the Faculty of Continuing and Applied Studies, treasurer, secretary, and assistant secretary.
