Surveillance cameras may be coming to St. George's

Surveillance cameras could become the order of the day in St. George's as residents try to cut down on bad behaviour displayed around the main bus stop.

And Police are being encouraged to have a radar blitz to help to curb some of the poor driving habits on Bermuda's roads.

These were a few of the ideas thrashed out during the second Police Eastern Consultative Committee meeting at the Corporation of St. George's offices recently.

Committee spokesman W.A. Toppy Cowen said: "There is serious concern about the deplorable conduct by a few in the old town of St. George's especially around the main bus stop.

"We are anticipating receiving quotes for the closed circuit camera from local suppliers shortly.'' Additionally, Mr. Cowen said that the recent deaths on the roads had brought the committee's focus on the "disgraceful'' driving habits that some members of the public have exhibited.

Consequently the he said the Committee has appealed to Police to have a "radar blitz'' to crack down on "senseless driving behaviour.'' "In the long term we see an urgency in incorporating the cameras on our highways that will photograph vehicles driving at excessive speeds.'' Meanwhile, Chief Inspector Vendal Bridgeman had produced a plan of action that he hopes will reassure the community that the Police are serious about preventing crime and protecting the public.

Included among its list of promises are: Increasing foot patrols in the Town of St. George's and in the parishes.

To ensure that the Parish Constables receive greater training in public speaking and the necessary skills in dealing with the public.

For parish constables to identify all vulnerable persons within their parishes and to maintain a log of visits to them their needs and concerns.
