Southampton West, the Progressive Labour Party announced yesterday.

Mr. Lister, who has been PLP campaign co-chairman along with Sen. Alex Scott, would be joined in that role by Mr. Milton Scott to allow him time for canvassing, Opposition Leader Mr. Frederick Wade said at a news conference.

The PLP has now named 34 candidates out of a possible 40 for the impending General Election.

Mr. Wade would not say whether more would be named. "We may be finished, we may not be finished,'' he said.

For months the party expressed uncertainty over whether a second candidate would join Mr. Scott, who polled 21 percent of the vote when running alone against two incumbents in 1989.

The PLP runs single candidates in some constituencies to take advantage of "plumping'' and increase chances of winning one of the two seats. When voters plump, they mark only one name on their ballots, instead of the two permitted.

Mr. Lister said the decision reflected PLP optimism about party fortunes. "We feel very confident of having won the 22 seats necessary to be the Government,'' he said. The party was now trying "to push that number on.'' A partner in Deloitte and Touche, Mr. Lister said he did not live in Southampton and would rely on Mr. Michael Scott to inform him of constituents' concerns. Also, "for the next three weeks we'll be out there knocking on doors,'' he said.

He and Mr. Scott will face hotelier Mr. David Dodwell and Sen. Pamela Gordon of the United Bermuda Party. The National Liberal Party is running businessman Mr. Matthew Lindo.

Neither of the sitting MPs is running. Transport Minister the Hon. Ralph Marshall has retired from politics and Independent Mr. Harry Viera has said he would not run in Southampton West.

Born in Somerset, Mr. Lister attended West End Primary School and Southampton Glebe before graduating from Berkeley Institute. He studied at Trinity College in Port Hope, Ontario before earning a Bachelor of Commerce at Queen's University and a Master of Business Administration at York in Toronto.

After working for three years with Price Waterhouse in Toronto, Mr. Lister returned to the Island in 1980 and started his own accounting firm. In 1982 he joined Rawlinson and Hunter, now operating as Deloitte and Touche.

A director of Bermuda Aviation Services and BF&M, Mr. Lister is a trustee of the Bermuda Biological Station for Research. He is Sunday School superintendent and treasurer at his church, and chairman of the Berkeley Institute Board of Governors.

UBP executive officer Mr. Joe Gibbons said Mr. Lister was a good candidate, but "it's a little late in the day.

"Clearly, he's not going to have time to canvass the constituency, and in our view, that is where the election is going to be won,'' Mr. Gibbons said. The UBP has announced a full slate of candidates.

Mr. Lister was the PLP's campaign chairman for Sandys in 1989. He and his wife Cheryl-Ann have three daughters and one son.

Mr. Milton Scott, the union organiser for the Amalgamated Bermuda Union of Teachers, had "great skills as an administrator,'' and had been involved in the campaign for some time as deputy campaign chairman, Mr. Wade said.
