Hundreds of students enjoyed a nutritious breakfast at their desks yesterday.

Many nutritionist say breakfast provides around 25 percent of the daily nutritional needs. And those who skip it, often do not make up for those missed nutrients later in the day.

Therefore a worldwide initiative called Nutrition Quest has just been launched. It is a programme directed at Bermuda's school pupils and concentrates on educating children and adults about the importance of getting a good start to the day by eating a good breakfast.

Yesterday, representatives from the BGA group of companies set out across the Island to more than 25 public and private schools to deliver a nutritious breakfast of individual bowls of Kellogg's cereal and milk to students.

The main focus of Nutrition Quest is to ensure that the Island's pupils, teachers, health professionals and parents understand the importance of having a good breakfast and how it can benefit the student through the day, a spokesperson said.

"Nutrition Quest was developed in conjunction with the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations,'' said Karla de Sousa, Director of Marketing for the BGA Group of Companies.

"Independent research has shown, time and time again, that if students begin the day with a healthy breakfast it ensures the body gets the nutrients it needs and means children stand more chance of operating at their peak performance throughout the school day.'' Pupils were also given a "How To'' guide to keeping a healthy diet.
