This is your wake-up call
Harbour is a call to Bermudians to protect what is left of their Country. This is the prime example of exploitation of Bermuda by a few greedy foreigners at the expense of the Bermudian people. It is a disgrace. Bermuda Properties Ltd.
is almost totally owned and operated by non-Bermudians and is functioning to the detriment of Bermuda. It should be stopped.
Those people who originally thought that this development was not so bad because it would benefit the sagging tourism industry are beginning to think that they were duped. It seems now that tourism was an excuse and a cover and this is really just greedy exploitation of Bermuda. It is difficult to see how the project benefits tourism and it appears independent of the ailing Castle Harbour Hotel.
These developers do not care about Bermuda, but we should not blame them too much. They are taking what they have been given. For reasons which remain a mystery, our own Government changed the law in a hurry to allow this housing project. Contrary to what many people have been told, this development is opposed by the Mid Ocean Club and by its neighbours. Government should learn from the behaviour of this group that it has a duty not to become involved with people who are prepared to act to the detriment of Bermuda. Bermuda today and the future of Bermudians must come first.
Too often, individual Bermudians often react to the development of Bermuda only when they actually see things happening. That is true in this case. This plan for desecration was rushed past Government and the old Cabinet in the most unseemly fashion and the public did have time to respond. This should be a lesson to Bermudians, a wake-up NOW call, to pay attention.
Government also has a great deal to learn here. Do not underestimate the anger of the people caused by some unseemly recent decisions. People are a good deal more than upset by "that'' house on Harbour Road which was approved by an acting Minister. There are serious people who think the house should be removed, no matter what the cost. It remains a mystery to us how this house was ever approved. The same is true of the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute at East Broadway in which "the powers that be'' are so heavily involved. That was also rushed through the House of Assembly and approved by an acting Minister.
It seems very strange to the people that these highly controversial projects can be done in a hurry and stamped by acting Ministers. It also seems to the general public that their projects are held in firm check by Planning but some people get whatever they want. Government has to move to correct that perception.
The sad thing is that this desecration is done to Bermuda in the most selfish way. Forget Bermuda, I'll have it my way. Forget Bermuda, I'll make a buck.
Wake-up NOW, Bermudians. Your children's heritage is being destroyed.
