Tourism's new summer show
ideas for a new summer show which will be performed in Dockyard, St. George's and Hamilton.
The multi-faceted programme, Island Review, is aimed at addressing the lack of entertainment which visitors have complained about in surveys.
The show, which is to run a minimum of five nights a week from May to October, should include at least two forms of entertainment and not be confined to music, according the brief prepared by Tourism.
The aim is to "expose visitors to a variety of local cultural forms,'' says the brief.
Minister of Tourism, David Allen is expected to appeal for entertainers to pitch for the contract at a press conference this afternoon.
Bermuda Hotel Association (BHA) and other industry partners have joined forces with the Ministry of Tourism to back the show, although precise details about who will pay for what have not been ironed out.
BHA executive vice-president John Harvey told The Royal Gazette : "It's brand new and one which we can work together to make happen.
"The reason is that guests need to be entertained in a way in which they will be satisfied in a show that is properly and professionally produced.
"There is a recognition that the days when the hotels used to do those things are gone, but we can't leave it as is.
"The consensus was we had to move forward with a show somewhere beside the hotels where the guests can go and everyone is satisfied.'' Producers are invited to submit a tender for the show by February 23 which is fully costed out.
They will be required to put on a minimum of two forms of entertainment in Dockyard, one in St. George's and two in the City of Hamilton or central parishes.
They will have to complement existing events such as Harbour Nights in the city and Heritage Nights in St. George's.
Tourism will be responsible for the marketing of the event on Island and overseas.
