Trash dumping upsets Railway Trail residents
Residents near a Railway Trail are fuming mad over daily dumping of illegal garbage.
And according to Riviera Crescent resident Barclay Carmichael, the illegal dumping has been going on "for years'' -- despite posted Government signs.
"It's a bad habit that has to stop because it's a health hazard and area residents are totally fed up,'' said Mr. Carmichael. "Every day people from the surrounding areas dump their trash -- right now, there are bags of trash and an old barbecue out there.
"I've seen old washers and driers -- everything besides a horse and a cow, and who knows, that might be next,'' he added.
Mr. Carmichael said the offensive Railway Trail is located behind Heron Bay School near the Jehovah's Witnesses Kingdom Hall in Southampton.
And he noted Works and Engineering came by the site every other day to clean up the mess.
But he criticised Government for just cleaning up the site as opposed to rectifying the situation.
"The smell is very foul, I can tell you... you sometimes have fish, lobster and sanitary napkins sitting out in the heat for a few days,'' he said.
"Works and Engineering will come by at 10 a.m. and by 3.30, people have already started dumping garbage.
"I'm an avid walker and it's supposed to be a scenic route -- and if the residents are this upset, I'm sure it doesn't register well with the tourists, either.
"They are literally dumping in our backyard, and it's got to stop,'' he added.
Works and Engineering Minister Alex Scott could not be reached for comment.
