Trust establishes review team for new Bermuda plan
to review new zonings under the 1992 Bermuda Plan.
Trust environmental committee chairman Mrs. Lee Davidson yesterday said the council decided that a subcommittee should be formed because reviewing the Bermuda Plan is a big undertaking and the environmental committee has its own agenda.
The plan, which replaces the 1983 Development Plan that has governed development in Bermuda for nearly a decade, imposes greater control on development and use of land.
The plan has come under fire from architects and real estate developers who say the new zonings cut down on what was developable under previous plans.
The Trust has not made any comment on the plan which Government says will do more to protect the environment.
It also defines what is allowed in the new zonings.
High, medium and low density and Garden District zones for housing development have been replaced by Residential 1 and Residential 2 zones.
For Residential 1, the most intensive of the two, the maximum density of development is six houses per acre, with a minimum lot size of 6,000 square feet and a maximum site coverage of 35 percent.
For Residential 2, the maximum density is two houses per acre, the minimum lot size is 18,000 square feet and the maximum site coverage of 20 percent.
The Royal Gazette understands that the subcommittee, chaired by lawyer Mr.
Alan Dunch, will look at new zonings in each parish to make sure they are applicable to the land.
With September 11 set as the deadline for any objections to zonings or provisions in the planning statement, the review will be carried out by volunteers.
