TV theft sends man to jail
in prison, in Magistrates' Court yesterday.
Basil M. Stewart, of Canal Road, pleaded guilty to stealing the television from the Pembroke Community Centre on December 1.
"At 4.15 a.m. the director of the centre noticed that the building's lights were on and the door was wide open,'' said Police prosecutor Sgt. Earl Kirby.
He added: "After going inside he saw that the $296 Sony television was missing and notified the Police.'' Sgt. Kirby also said that as a result of information received Stewart was arrested and admitted stealing the television to buy drugs.
Stewart told Police he had hidden the television in some nearby bushes.
Acting Magistrate the Wor. Edward King sentenced Stewart to 12 months in prison and said: "You are lucky that you're not going upstairs for sentencing.''
