Unreliable teen jailed
the Probation Department and Magistrates' Court.
Jermaine Orr, 16, of Mount Hill, was remanded in custody on Thursday for two weeks while a social inquiry report is prepared.
Orr told the court that he had "forgotten'' about his appointment for a previous social inquiry study, since his previous court appearance on a variety of traffic offences.
The youngster was spotted by Police riding his Yamaha 50 at high speed along Middle Road, Paget, on August 11.
Police said that Orr had been racing with two other motorcyclists and causing other motorists to take evasive action.
Police told him to stop at traffic lights but he crossed over to the opposite lane and set off towards Paget, again causing traffic to swerve.
He was finally stopped at Rural Hill, where he attempted to run away from Police officers, who eventually caught him.
The officers noticed that Orr smelled of alcohol but refused to give a breath test. They found that he had no insurance, no licence, and his bike had an oversized engine. He was also driving underage.
A Devon Lane School pupil at the time, other offences against him were later discovered.
Yesterday, Orr told the court that he had left school and had been doing nothing over the past two weeks.
Senior Magistrate, the Wor. Will Francis asked why Orr had not turned up to see the probation officer, Miss Gina Everheart.
Orr replied: "I forgot to go down there.'' Mr. Francis wanted to give Orr another chance as long as he turned up for the social inquiry interview, but Miss Everheart objected.
She said: "We need a total commitment. We are not in a position to chase up after him. He should be remanded in custody so we can furnish this report to the court.'' Mr. Francis said: "I think Miss Everheart is right. I will remand you in custody because that is the only way I am going to get anything satisfactory done here.'' He asked Orr how he could pay if he were heavily fined. The defendant replied: "I will pay the fine. I will get money from my Momma.''
