Upgrade of small roads
Footpath Lane, Mission Lane and Border Lane South in Pembroke are going to be widened to make room for ambulance and other emergency traffic.
Work has begun on some of the roads earlier this month.
Works and Engineering Minister Alex Scott has instituted this ambitious plan gathering three-quarters of the landowners to consent to the project.
"We are probably going to widen them,'' he said.
But not everyone is happy about the improvements.
One Border Lane South resident, who declined to be named, was not satisfied.
"I don't see any improvements at all,'' he said. "I don't see no improvements. All I see them doing week before last is patching up but I don't see them doing nothing else. I'll talk to my MP about this. I'm so taken aback. I did see them a couple weeks ago ... if you look just on each side they just patched up.'' But Winston Woodley said: "I think the improvements are very good. Before the improvements the road wasn't that good. It was bumpy and there was grass on the road. It was really messed up.'' On Mission Lane, Pembroke there was not much difference in opinion.
Resident Quinton Caines said: "I don't know nothing about it. People came around but I don't know what they were here for. I saw a few surveyors but they were just basically surveying the area.'' Another resident, Cheryl Hatherley, said: "I haven't been here for the last two weeks so I don't know, and I'm in the house so I don't know what goes on out there. I'm going to be honest with you, just looking at the roads I can say that there really hasn't been anything done to it.'' Mrs. Alfred Bean, a resident of Footpath Lane in Pembroke, said: "I really thought they were going to pave them right over, not spots. I'm very pleased with what they have done. I thought it was going to be a complete paving -- that's what I got the impression from the letter I got from Works and Engineering. It's much better. They did it last week, before this weather set in.'' A Footpath Lane resident, who also declined to be named, said: "So far it is OK because they filled in some of the ruts. But eventually I hope they're going to do the whole road. All around Footpath Lane and Mission Lane we get a lot of traffic.
"They started out there by St. Monica's Road. I think you can see the fresh tarmac. They started week before last I think. I would like to see the whole road paved, but for time being the ruts are filled in.''
