US Consul may meet with Clinton over future post by this weekend
US Consul General Robert Farmer expects to discuss his future in the next couple of months with American President Bill Clinton.
Yesterday he told The Royal Gazette there was even a remote chance of meeting Clinton during a trip to the US this week.
Mr. Farmer flies out to America tomorrow for a five-day visit.
On Saturday he will travel by special train from Washington to Philadelphia to witness a big American football tradition -- the Army-Navy clash.
The occasion will be attended by admirals and other military chiefs.
"There is a possibility of meeting the President while I'm over there, but as you know he is very busy at the moment, putting together a Cabinet.
"His secretary is working on it, but I expect to see him sometime in the next couple of months.'' Mr. Farmer will be going to the States again on December 11 -- to Miami, for a conference of ambassadors.
"We talk about common problems such as drug enforcement, money laundering, justice problems and security problems.'' Speculation has abounded over Mr. Farmer's future since Clinton comfortably defeated Republican hopeful Bob Dole in the recent US presidential election.
Mr. Farmer, who was appointed by Clinton, said he would be happy to stay in Bermuda, if asked to do so.
"I would be happy to serve wherever he thinks I may be most useful.'' A former campaign fund-raiser for Clinton, Mr. Farmer moved into the Consul's official residence Chelston in Paget two years ago.
