Volunteer calf-sitters keep long vigil on baby dolphin
An overwhelming volunteer effort is providing around-the-clock "calf-sitting'' for the baby Atlantic bottle nose dolphin at Dolphin Quest.
Bailey and her one-week-old calf are nursing regularly and appear comfortable and healthy.
"Bailey has been incredible and a great mom. She is very patient and never panics,'' said Dolphin Quest Bermuda Director of Animal Management Dave Gossman.
The new family have remained in the protected cove at the Southampton facility and are socialising with the two female dolphins Caliban and Cirrus.
But while Bailey and her calf appear to be doing well, the calf is still fragile and the dolphins will continue to undergo around-the-clock observation -- thanks to community volunteers who have generously supported the facility with their time.
Dolphin Quest Bermuda Director of Operations, Michelle Hammond, said: "All the volunteers have been wonderful. The scheduled observations involve long hours, often in the middle of the night, and the volunteers show real devotion, cooperation and enthusiasm, greatly appreciated by everyone at Dolphin Quest.'' The family will remain in the protected cove and are available for public observation in the facility's Behind the Scenes tour.
