What's in a name?

established and somewhat old fashioned. Cedarbridge Academy is a good attempt at a name which sounds establishment, if somewhat North American, yet has meaning in a Bermudian sense. ..As solid, strong and as valuable as Bermuda cedar while bridging the gaps in Bermudian society and creating a bridge to the future.

Thankfully the trustees have kept away from using the name of a prominent person or of an educator. Bermuda is not a place which generally attaches people's names to its institutions, although there are notable exceptions like Francis Patton, Victor Scott, Saltus, Whitney and Purvis.

It is easy to remember the public reaction, pro and con, when Sir John Swan announced that the revamped Airport would be called the Sir Henry Tucker International Airport and the park to replace the Pembroke garbage dump would be called the Dr. E. F. Gordon Park. Both names were allowed to fade.

Berkeley Institute very sensibly intends to keep its name as one of the two public secondary schools and, we think, will soon become the most sought after of the two schools. That is not to suggest that it will be academically better than the new mega school and almost certainly it will not be as well equipped.

Tradition and long-established public trust will guarantee that Berkeley Institute will be looked on as preferable and will attract the better students.

Given the history of education in Bermuda and the very complicated way we educate our children, it will take Cedarbridge Academy a long period of academic success and a demonstrated record of safety and smooth operation before anyone will choose the school with any confidence. The school administration will have to prove that this is not just a fancier Government dumping ground for the students other schools reject academically or financially. That will be difficult to achieve if the flight to private education continues and the better public school students want Berkeley.

We are constantly told how wonderful the facilities at Cedarbridge are going to be. Not one person doubts that but we are still to see an academic curriculum.

The administration will have a tough job. The mega school is the school very few wanted and it is viewed with a good deal of suspicion, even alarm. But, just as people believe the facilities will be good, they hope that the school will fulfill its mission now that, like it or not, it is becoming a reality.

It was designed to broaden the opportunities for young Bermudians and to stop young men from "falling through the cracks''. There is not one person in Bermuda who does not hope for its success as a strong school, bridging the gaps and taking Bermudians to the future.
