Leon (Jimmy) Williams was set to stand down due to ill health.

Mr. Williams -- currently in the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital -- was not available for comment.

But a press release quashed broadcast reports that Mr. Williams was to quit.

PLP spokesman Michael Scott declined to discuss Mr. Williams' medical problems.

But he said: "Mr. Williams, who is currently convalescing, expects to be back to full form within the next few weeks.'' He added there was "no question'' about Mr. Williams ability to represent his constituents.

Mr. Scott said: "He has assured the party that it is his intention to resume canvassing as soon as possible in anticipation of the impending General Election.'' HEALTH HTH
