Woman felt threatened by `stalker'

A woman has described how her ex-boyfriend allegedly threatened her in a nightclub and later violated a Domestic Violence Order by being on her property.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was further remanded into custody over the weekend at the conclusion of the first day of his trial in Magistrates' Court yesterday.

The accused is currently the subject of a temporary Domestic Violence Order handed down in June and amended earlier this month. He cannot be named under the Order.

The woman -- who has two children by the man -- said she left work on Friday 19 January and saw the Devonshire man standing across the street.

Minutes later as she drove away the man drove slowly past the junction she was at "in an attempt to upset me to see my children sitting in his girlfriend's lap''.

Later that night she saw the man at the Docksiders Club on Front Street but she ignored his requests to talk. The woman claimed he verbally abused her.

The following morning she returned to Hamilton to pick up her car and found three tyres slashed. She reported the incident to the Police.

On Monday, January 22, she claimed the man telephoned her "numerous times''.

Later that night she was at home and investigated a noise to see the man standing outside her front door.

"He then told me I had not seen the last of him and at this point he was walking backwards into the darkness,'' she explained. "I told him the next time I would see him he would be locked up. He said no one would ever get him and that I had no proof or evidence.'' Under questioning by defence lawyer Larry Mussenden, the woman explained the glass louvres to the door were open and she could "clearly'' see the man.

She "snapped a picture'' using a camera which ready for such purposes. No photographs were tendered in evidence.

"When he saw my camera he started to run,'' the woman said. "He stood behind a tree and asked me if I had a good weekend and asked me if I had a hard time to get around.

"I shouted at him and yelled at him and told him to stay away from myself and my children and to get away from my property,'' she continued. "He told me I needed to watch my back because I'm going to get f***ed up.'' When asked by Crown Counsel Oonagh Goodred why she had wanted to take a photograph, the woman said: "So I could have some proof that he was already there.

The woman was steadfast on what the man's actions were outside of her job and at Docksiders nightclub.

Ex-girlfriend felt threatened But she admitted the man never spoke to her until she saw him at the club and that she was not concerned for her safety.

Inside Docksiders the woman admitted they were in the billiards area and that the man was closer to the exit.

"I put it to you he never said anything to you,'' Mr. Mussenden asked.

"He did approach me and he did tell me that I was a bitch and a whore and to wait and see what happens,'' she answered.

"But you did continue to socialise at Docksiders. And he did leave didn't he?'' Mr. Mussenden fired back. "And I suggest to you that the person you saw outside your door on Monday was not this man.'' The trial continues on Monday morning.
