Officers diverted all traffic heading out of Hamilton up Lane Hill as they tended to the injured woman just before 10 p.m.

Her badly mangled bike was lifted onto a Police van nearly 30 minutes later, as crash scene investigators began piecing together their inquiry.

Full details of the accident were not available as The Royal Gazette went to press but it is not thought any other vehicles were involved.

Police spokeswoman Evelyn James Barnett confirmed the bike rider had not suffered life-threatening injuries.

She said: "Thankfully this is not a fatality or a life-threatening type of accident.

"Investigators are still at the scene so we cannot be more specific about details at this time.'' It was not clear how old the rider was or exactly what type of injuries she had suffered.

But at least four Police patrol cars responded to the accident and uniformed officers immediately began re-routing traffic.

Three cars formed a road block at the town end of East Broadway and traffic officers using neon signals pointed all vehicles up Lane Hill so Hamilton-bound traffic could cross onto the other side of the carriageway.

The road was finally cleared around an hour after the crash.
