Junior Crown counsel Veronica Gordon told the court that on February 17 a Police mobile patrol responded to a report of drug activity in the area of Princess Street and Angle Street .

On arriving at the scene, officers saw a woman walking out of an alley near a building. They approached the woman who said her name was Janet Lee Cartwright and noticed that she was fidgeting.

The woman was asked whether she had any drugs or equipment on her person and eventually told the Police she had a pipe.

She was searched and the pipe was found in the left inside pocket of her jacket. The pipe tested positive for the presence of cocaine.

Cartwright, 44, of Alexandra Road, Devonshire, pleaded guilty to the charge of possessing apparatus fitted for the misuse of a drug and was fined $150.

The second incident also took place at the corner of Princess and Angle streets.

The court heard that at 6 p.m. on February 17, Police on mobile patrol in the area saw two women, one of whom became very nervous on seeing the approaching car.

Police officers went up to the woman and told her she would be searched and asked her whether she was in possession of drugs or equipment. Donna Carla Darrell initially said "no'' and was uncooperative as Police tried to search her.

Eventually she admitted that she had a pipe in her jacket pocket.

She told Police: "I'm guilty. I'm not going to lie about it.'' The pipe tested positive for traces of cocaine.

Darrell, 37 of Cemetery Road, Pembroke pleaded guilty to possessing drug equipment.

Unemployed at the time of the offence, Darrell is now employed at the Hamilton Princess and yesterday she told Senior Magistrate Will Francis that she was attending a programme at Addiction Services and was on the road to recovery.

Her counsellor spoke on her behalf and Mr. Francis then ordered Darrell to pay a fine of $150.

The third matter again involved a woman and occurred on February 17.

Mr. Francis heard how on that day Police on mobile patrol on Court Street, near the Jamaican Grill, saw a woman leaning in the window of a car apparently in the midst of a hand-to-hand transaction.

As Police approached, she moved away from the car and was fidgeting. She was searched and tried to obstruct Police, but a pipe was found in her jacket pocket.

The pipe tested positive for the presence of cocaine.

Alfreda Webb, 32, of St. John's Road, Pembroke, yesterday admitted having drug equipment. The unemployed woman was also fined $150.
