Yacht club burgled

The club was secured by management around 2 a.m. on Saturday morning, but several hours later, the custodian went to the club and discovered a glass door had been smashed and the premises broken into.

Once inside, three gaming machines were attacked and an unknown quantity of cash taken. Central CID is investigating.

A South Road, Paget home was also broken into between 7.30 p.m. Friday and 2 a.m. Saturday.

The complainant said several items of jewellery were stolen, including a thin gold-link chain, a gold anchor charm pendant, a gold boat propeller charm pendant and a stainless steel Tag Heuer men's watch with a royal blue face.

In another incident, a computer and printer were stolen from a Spanish View Road, Smith's Parish home on Saturday.

The 65-year-old victim said he left for work around 8.40 a.m. Saturday, returning just before 5.30 p.m. to discover the break-in.

MECHANICS ACCREDITED AWD Mechanics accredited Eighteen young Bermudian mechanics were recently awarded City and Guilds vocational accreditation through the Bermuda College and the National Training Board.

In all, 33 Bermudian workers sat one or more of the examinations at the College in June or December. Of the 53 exams written locally, the pass rate was 83 percent.

City and Guilds is the leading provider of vocational qualifications in the United Kingdom and, through its international division, provides internationally recognised technical and professional certification around the world.

Bermuda College is a certified examining centre for the organisation.

CAR FIRE EXTINGUISHED FIR Car fire extinguished Police attended a report of a car fire near the South Roundabout on South Shore Road, Paget over the weekend.

The owners of the car said they were travelling south when they noticed smoke coming from the car.

The vehicle eventually cut out, and when the owners got out, they saw sparks underneath the front end of the car.

A fire then started and firefighters attended and extinguished the fire.

Investigations concluded the fire was a result of a fuel line coming undone, and the car received extensive front end damage.

THIEVES HIT SCHOOL CRM ED Thieves hit school A break-in was reported at Purvis Primary School, St. Mary's Road, Warwick over the weekend.

The raid was discovered on Sunday evening after an alarm went off. One of the rooms inside had been entered but it was not clear if anything had been stolen.

And thieves attempted to break into Tiffany's Variety Store on Court Street early on Sunday morning. A lock was tampered with but entry was not gained.

SAILOR ABANDONS YACHT RES Sailor abandons yacht Severe sea sickness caused a Bermuda-bound sailor to abandon ship last Friday.

The 53-year-old single-handed sailor had been suffering for three days when he put out a distress call as he was 230 miles northwest of the Island at 8.30 a.m. on Friday.

Four hours later the motor tanker Delfina recovered the sick sailor as it made its way to Boston.

Talks are now on about how to salvage the 55-foot Arcadia which earlier reports had suggested had been taking on water.

A Harbour Radio spokesmen said winds had been at 10-13 knots and waves had been ten feet high when the sailor decided to call it a day.

The spokesman said: "It's not that unusual to have conditions like that but there was a storm forecast -- it wasn't set to improve at all.'' "With sea sickness you get dehydrated.''
