Young sex offender remanded

while probation officers and his lawyer try and get him in a juvenile facility in Utah for a sex crime.

Shawn Mark Nusum, of Smith's Avenue, has been on remand since last autumn for an attack on another boy as the pair walked home last year.

Nusum was convicted after a trial prosecuted by Crown Counsel Graveney Bannister in November.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner has waited since then for a social inquiry, psychiatric, and psychological reports to be completed.

With the final report in his hands yesterday, Mr. Warner told Nusum's lawyer Victoria Pearman and a probation officer they would have the six weeks after he was told the Birdseye Boy Ranch in Utah could provide the necessary treatment for him.

"What is the reality with regard to the moolah (money) now?'' Mr. Warner said. "He needs a treatment programme which meets his needs and a residential programme with other young people would be ideal? "And we don't have that here?'' he added. "Do I remand him until we get some money to drop from heaven? "I'm willing to consider this if that's what he needs but if we don't get a residential component he would go to that residence down there (the Senior Training School for young men).'' Nusum was convicted of luring a younger boy into a dark wooded area of Warwick at 11 p.m. on April 28 and grabbed him by the neck into an even more secluded area.

Over the other boy's protests Nusum forced him to touch his penis while threatening him with his fist.

Nusum performed oral sex on the other boy and forced him to touch him before breaking off the attack and saying: "Don't tell anybody.'' Since the incident, Nusum has appeared in court more than ten times as discussions continued as to what to do with him.
