Alshante Brangman died of natural causes – Police
Police have released a man they were quizzing over the death of a young mother after an autopsy revealed she died of natural causes.
Alshante Brangman, 23, died in hospital on Tuesday following an alleged domestic incident.
Officers from the Serious Crime Unit launched an investigation, and a 28-year-old man was arrested. However, the Police announced last night that a forensic pathologist ruled out foul play, and they have released the man from custody. Ms Brangman's father, Allan DeGraff Sr. told The Royal Gazette he is satisfied with the Police findings.
"I don't know what really caused it, but I just feel my daughter was sick, real sick, so I never suspected the young gentleman of killing my daughter because I knew my daughter was sick," he explained.
Mr DeGraff, 42, of St Monica's Road, Pembroke, has been briefed by the Police on the autopsy findings.
He was unable to specify the cause of death beyond saying: "It's a combination of things.
"She's been ill for some time but was waiting to get some tests so they could send her away.
"The outcome was that my daughter died waiting. She was swelling up, she had different allergies, she was having hives on her body for different things. I don't know what she was allergic to. The Police did tell me she died from natural causes. They just ruled out she died from unnatural causes, and said it was a combination of different sicknesses."
Ms Brangman's mother, Gina Wilson, told this newspaper on Wednesday that her daughter was sick and bedridden at her Cedar Park, Devonshire, home the day before her death.
She called an ambulance when her condition deteriorated, but she died in hospital.
Ms Wilson believed her daughter had internal bleeding.
Ms Brangman's stepfather, Dion Wilson, said she had black eyes, and looked like someone had hurt her.
The couple declined to comment yesterday on news of the investigation findings.
The Police statement said: "The autopsy of 23-year-old Alshante Brangman is now complete and the forensic pathologist has determined that her death is not suspicious.
As a result, the 28-year-old Sandys parish man that was in Police custody assisting with inquiries into the matter has been formally released.
Therefore there is no further Police action required. "The Bermuda Police Service again extends sincere condolences to the Brangman family on the untimely passing of their loved one."
Ms Brangman was a single mother, and leaves a three-year-old daughter, A'Saiya. Plans for her funeral are yet to be announced.
