Amnesty International marks day for the Eradication of Poverty

Amnesty International in Bermuda is urging people to buy a book on poverty written by the charity's secretary general.

A display about 'The Unheard Truth, Poverty and Human Rights' by Irene Khan will go up at Bermuda Bookstore on Queen Street today (Saturday) and copies will be available to purchase for $19.95.

Local Amnesty executive director Lucy Attride-Stirling said the book was being launched today in New York because October 17 is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

"We have secured several of these books for our members and anyone who may be interested," she said. "It has lots of amazing photos."

The book describes poverty as the world's largest human rights crisis and says more than 963 million people around the world go to bed hungry every night, while one billion people live in slums.
